Moving Tips

Best time to Move

If you have a choice, we suggest you pick a time other than the summer months to move. Should you be unable to avoid that period, try to avoid the first or last week of a summer month. The heaviest demands are placed on our vans and trucks during this period of time.

Doing Your Own Packing

If you are going to do your own packing, we’ll be happy to supply you at competitive prices with either new or used packing material. This can dramatically reduce the cost of your move. You will need various sizes of cartons. Our Moving Consultant can help decide the number and type of cartons you will need. The basic premise of packing is the heavier the item, the smaller the carton! Your Moving Consultant will be happy to supply you with our literature “Doing Your Own Packing”. Plan ahead if you are doing this. It is vitally important to make sure you have finished this process prior to the arrival of the van.

Placing a Value on Your Shipment

The contract you sign with Mayflower provides two options for placing a value on your shipment. The value you select is the maximum liability for loss or damage to your goods. Before you sign your Bill of Lading you must decide how much your articles are worth and declare a value on your shipment. Valuation is a tariff based level of Motor Carrier liability and is not insurance. Please make sure you fully understand your options before making your selection. Again, our Moving Consultants will give you a detailed list of your options.

Making Payment

Unless your shipment has been pre-approved for billing to a company, our Van Operator will be unable to begin unloading until your have paid for your shipment. If you have received a non-binding estimate, we will need to collect 110% of the estimated charges. If actual charges exceed 110% of the estimated amount, we will bill you for the balance 30 days after delivery. If you have a binding estimate, we will need to collect 100% of the estimated charges prior to unloading. Payment can be in the form of credit card, certified or cashiers check, or money order. Should you wish to use a credit card we will need to make arrangements to do this prior to loading your shipment.
